The Community Foundation has been closely following the impact of COVID-19 in Mendocino County. In a county like ours with minimal industry and philanthropic resources, the combined hit on individuals, small business, and the non-profit sector is potentially devastating.
In response, the Community Foundation has established the COVID-19 Relief Fund to provide basic needs to individuals, families, and organizations adversely impacted by the pandemic. We also have boosted our Save-the-Day grant program specifically to support non-profit organizations adapt to these challenging economic times. Lastly, we have created the Business Innovation and Resiliency Fund to assist micro-businesses get through the financial impact of shuttering their doors during the shelter-in-place order. Information on these individual funds and our grant-making is below.
Our top priority is to serve vulnerable people, communities, and the organizations that support them. Under our initial COVID-19 response, we currently estimate this to include seniors; low-income families and youth; low-access residents; individuals with underlying physical, emotional, or intellectual conditions; disabled; homeless or housing insecure; Native Americans and communities of color; veterans; undocumented migrants; and service workers.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Community Foundation of Mendocino County has established a multi-sector COVID-19 Relief Program that encompasses support for individuals and families, small businesses, and non-profit organizations in Mendocino County. Our communities rely on the many non-profit organizations for basic needs, arts and cultural opportunities, caring for the environment, and so much more. However, these critical organizations are already experiencing financial and programmatic impacts due to the pandemic and correlating financial crisis. The Community Foundation aims to help non-profits adapt and to pivot to the changing social and economic conditions through COVID-19 Non-Profit Relief Grants, a component of the Foundation’s Non-Profit Relief Program.

Two and half months ago our community came together to protect the most vulnerable from the devastating effects of the pandemic by collectively sheltering in place. We knew the impact would be far and wide, and it was important for us to continue to help our community thrive. Together with our donors, whose intentions were in perfect alignment with ours, the COVID-19 Relief Fund was created to help community members throughout Mendocino County struggling during the crisis, and some of our lead donors wanted to make an impact in inland Mendocino County. We are fortunate to be able to partner with North Coast Opportunities (NCO), our long-time fire recovery partner, to provide individual assistance to those in need. As a result, struggling families have a centralized source where they can apply for much needed support.

At the heart of our work is ensuring donors’ intentions are met to help our community thrive. When we created the COVID-19 Relief Fund to help community members throughout Mendocino County impacted by the pandemic, some of our lead donors requested their contributions be used to support coastal residents. We always strive to ‘bridge the ridge,’ and were thrilled to have these resources to make a direct impact to those with the greatest need from Gualala to Westport. With these funds we made grants to two critical coastal organizations to provide individual relief to those in need.
